Kids make adorable things at school this time of year...ornaments for the tree, presents for mom and dad.

What is the sweetest homemade gift that you've ever received from a child?

Friday, December 17

Four ways to simplify your Christmas:

#1 Make 25-50 copies of a pic of your kids you already own (no family photography session). It's cheaper and quicker!

#2 Simply sign your Christmas cards and don't stress about a family letter.

#3 Bake one or two Christmas treats instead of "mass quantities."

#4 Skip the Christmas party or event you don't want to go to (and cherish those family traditions!).

The Jimmy Stewart Museum (located in Indiana, PA) needs a miracle... kind of like the one his character George Bailey received in the famous movie "It's a Wonderful Life."

What that lady in your life wants for Christmas...

...Something from the front of the clothing store (because she would always buy clearance items in the back of the store for herself)

Alternative: To SAVE money take her on a shopping spree! That way she'll pick out her own things from the clearance racks and you'll be the hero!

Want to make that tree stay alive (without all the shedding needles) longer?

Here's a special recipe that should do the trick...

Pour 2 gallons of hot water into a five gallon container, add the following:

1 pint of clear Karo syrup
4 oz of liquid chlorine bleach
2 oz kitchen vinegar
1/2 tsp. 20 Mule Team Borax
2 oz liquid Woolite

Stir ingredients into water, cut 1/2 inch from stump and stand tree in container to soak for 4-5 days. Prop in a shady area or in garage.

Holiday season is in full swing!

Here are some tips to protect yourself from December stress:

1. Say "No" to projects that will not fit into your time schedule. Choose those where you know you are “serving” and drop those things that are just time fillers.

2. Have back-ups- extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key , extra stamps, and extra batteries.

3. Most importantly, find time to be alone and pray.

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving--One Day Ahead Checklist:

-Peel Potatoes and place in a pot of cold water. Keep in the fridge.
-Clean veggies
-Prepare stuffing
-Spot clean (Again!)
-Check the TP in the bathrooms
-Put up decorations
-Buy flowers (for the table, if you use live flowers)
-Set the table (after dinner)
-Bake dishes that can be made ahead
-Put new batteries in the camera

This is an e-mail I once received and I've held onto it over the years:

I AM THANKFUL...

-For the wife who says “it's hot dogs tonight” because she is at home with me and not with someone else

-For the husband sitting in his recliner after dinner because he's at home with his family instead of out drinking with his friends

-For the teenager who's complaining about doing dishes because that means she's at home and not on the streets

-For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, gutters that need fixing because that means I have a home

-For my huge heating bill because that means at least I am warm

-For the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear

-For the alarm that goes off early in the morning because that means I am alive

For all these things and more...I am thankful

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

What is a date exactly when you are married? I think everyone has their own ideas and expectations, which of course can lead to conflict in marriage. Here are mine:

1) No kids!
2) An invitation...one person asks the other one out on a date.
3) It's a planned, agreed upon event.
4) It's a time to impress like you did before you were married. (Pretend like you haven't caught him/her yet and you want to win their heart!)

What are your expectations for a date? Do you date your spouse?

Love fried turkey on Thanksgiving? There may be a safer way to fry.

Consumer Reports says that electric turkey fryers are much safer. Testers checked out a new model from Butterball that costs as little as $117 and can go right on the countertop.

Testers fried a 12-pound turkey in the Masterbuilt Butterball Professional Series Indoor Electric Turkey Fryer. Forty-eight minutes later, out came a nicely browned, juicy turkey.

"It's definitely faster than roasting. The turkey was great. The thighs were a little bit oily, but other than that, it was delicious," Bernie Deitrick, with Consumer Reports, said.

Clean-up was easy, too. A lid helps prevent spattered oil, and a drain makes it easy to empty out the oil.

Welcome to a new week and a new month! I'm Brittney, your Midday Joy host--thank you for visiting my blog!

Have some leftover chocolate? (I hear you saying, "Yeah, right! Women don't have leftover chocolate!") Well, if you happen to have more than you can reasonably eat, here are some recipes that might fill the bill....I think that candy corn white chocolate bark looks good to me!

Someone to root for while watching the World Series--Texas Rangers' Josh Hamilton. After some difficult struggles with drugs and alcohol, here's what he has to say:

"You don't necessarily wake up in the morning and think about it - I'm not going to drink today or I'm not going to use drugs today," Hamilton said. "You have things in place. You wake up in the morning and pray. I do my Bible study in the morning and at night when I get home. I listen to Christian music and country music. There's a lot of things I had to change as far as what I was doing and what kind of life I was leading to make my life better."

Welcome to a new week and the Monday edition of Midday Joy!

It's not too soon to start thinking about Christmas shopping (can you believe it?), so here's a "heads up" for you:

Zhu Zhu Pets (average price, $10) are pegged to be the hottest toy this Christmas. (A far cry from items like Guitar Hero and the Nintendo DS that have broken the budget the last few years.) For a list of other hot (and frugal) toys this year, check
this out.

Speaking of shopping....

So you bought new jeans during the Tax Free Holiday and have worn them nonstop for the past 2 weeks for fear they’ll fade? Here’s the trick: Try soaking them in a 50-50 solution of cold water and white vinegar for an hour before their first washing, when the dye is most likely to run. Then, machine wash in cold water and hang dry. The vinegar will help set the dye so your jeans’ color stays put. (If only that worked for hair color!)

Here's a final tip for you as the new school year begins:

When it all boils down, what is most important in sending our children off to school? That they are spiritually equipped.

If you are only able to take away one or two tips from the month, I would encourage you to stick with these essentials:

Pray over your child on their first day of school and choose a verse for the year.

(Our family's school year verse this year is Joshua 1:9, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." NIV)

Choose whatever verse you find that covers your own children's needs.

Have a great school year!

Brittney’s Bucket List

*Write thank you notes to teachers and people who made a difference in my life.

*Visit Times Square on New Year’s Eve or Visit Punxatawney PA on Groundhog Day

*Go to a department store and buy an outfit at full price, get the full treatment at a day spa and then go on a date with Drew to a fancy restaurant

*Go to the airport and take the next direct flight to anywhere

*Run a mile (I've struggled with asthma my whole life and now my doctor has given me the "all clear" signal! PTL!)

*Get a book published (Manuscript written)

*Learn to swim

*Go on a missions trip with Compassion International or World Vision

*Do a Bible study for every book of the Bible (Three down, 63 to go!)

*Read and finish a book that is over 300 pages in length

BACKPACK SAFETY

-Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.

-Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the your child’s body weight.

-Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.

-Consider a rolling backpack. This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up stairs, and they may be difficult to roll in snow.

Today's "Back to School" tip:

Designate a route to and from school. This is the route where you'll know to find your kids in case there is an emergency--or they forgot something.

Knowing this route will also help you know how long to anticipate it to take your children to get home in the afternoon.

Friday, August 20, 2010

Friday, August 20

Happy Friday!

Today's tip:

"Hang time"- that time between when the last school bell rings and the time kids arrive home... Have a talk with your child about when you expect them to arrive home each day, if they are not riding the bus. As students get older they desire more freedom so discuss a length of social time after school you can both agree on.

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Thursday, August 19

Today's tip:

Have "the talk"... the cell phone talk! Before the kids are in school and hit the "everybody has one" pressure, discuss your thoughts on getting a cell phone as a family.

Maybe this is the right time for your son or daughter to have their own phone, maybe there is a compromise you are willing to make, or maybe the answer is simply, "no." Having this talk before school starts cuts the argument off at the pass.

LUNCH FOR A BUNCH*: Congratulations to the staff at True Vine Lawn Care in Salisbury!

Today's "Back to School" tip:

They can it separation anxiety...and it occurs almost as much in parents as it does in our little preschoolers or Kindergarteners heading off to school for the first time.

To prepare your kids for long days away, plan a play date or extended time with a babysitter. Also keep in mind that a kiss and a big hug on the first day then saying good-bye are better than a long, drawn out farewell.

Midday Joy with Brittney!

Here's Five Tips for Cleaning Smarter:

1.) Pare down. Get rid of things you don't love.
2.) Gear up. Have the right tools for cleaning - in the rooms you need them
3.) Deal with little jobs before they become big jobs.
4.) Just clean what is dirty - the one dirty spot on the floor, not all the floors!
5.) Focus elswhere - listen to music or talk to a friend on your Blue Tooth headset while cleaning.
